The first resource I would use is the Science Online. It contains many subject areas of science such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Marine Biology, etc. To get to this page, you go to the main InfOhio page, click on grades 9-12, and find Science Online. I would use this site to keep my students up to date on what is new in the science world. A lot of people find science boring but the latest advancements such as Curiosity landing on Mars and new discoveries in the constellations can peak their interests. The site also contains diagrams for studying subjects such as anatomy and earth science. I could show some of the videos in class to help my students understand how gas is exchanged in the lungs or how to apply Newton’s law to a ball. This site offers many opportunities for students to learn a wide range of subject areas on their own and as a class.
The second resource I would use is called A.D.A.M. and you go through the grades 9-12 section to find it. I would use this course for an Anatomy and Physiology course in order to discuss body systems and the possible diseases or disorders that affect them. This site also shows the types of therapy that are used to treat specific conditions. I could make a project that requires the students to research a specific disease and discuss with the class the causes and effects on the body systems and possible treatments. The site contains videos that the students could use to help explain what they learned. This site explains disorders and treatments in simple terms that high school students are able to understand.
To find the third source, you click on grades 9-12 and click on Landsat. This website would help for a geology/geography course. The site offers maps of Ohio from every year between 1999 and 2007. The maps and pictures are taken with different lenses so that you can see the differences in the land from month to month. The pictures are taken from a satellite and are sent to any states who decide to buy them. This site would help to describe satellites and the characteristics of the state of Ohio from space. There is a link on this site that takes students to the NASA page to study what the Landsat program is all about.
To get to the next site, click on grades 9-12 and click on NetWellness. This site has collaborative information from Case Western, The Ohio State University, and the University of Cinncinnati. The site contains a variety of Health Topics ranging from mental disorders to the common cold. Each topic contains the symptoms and tests along with the statistics for the disorder. The topics also contain possible questions that may arise from patients and the answers from professionals at the schools. I would find this site useful for an Anatomy and Physiology class and I would use it along with A.D.A.M. to do projects and classroom presentations.
To get to the last site you have to click on grades 9-12 and then on News Bank Inc. This site offers the latest news in health, weather, and science all around the world. The site offers links to local newspapers as well, which contain news about science and weather. I would use this in my classroom by requiring students to stay update with the latest science news and by reporting weekly what is going on in the world. Students will learn that being well-informed on current topics is important for higher learning.
